This beryl family gem ranks 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale, making it durable for engagement rings and everyday wear. Most aquamarines are heat-treated to enhance that dreamy blue color (removing any yellow tones), and the treatment is permanent and universally accepted in the trade and cannot be reversed by sunlight exposure, UV light, or exposure to water. It takes seriously heavy gamma irradiation to make aquamarine fade to yellow.
